Tom and Naomi Shirley might not be the first couple to die within minutes of one another, but their story is an inspiration and proves that true love can be more powerful than death. The Huffington Post reported Thursday of the Florida couple’s passing, which occurred minutes apart, with each unaware of the other’s death.
According to the SunSentinel the Southwest Ranches couple was married for 45 years. Tom and Naomi both died on Saturday at the Cleveland Clinic. The 83-year-old husband was taken to the hospital first for issues related to his heart. His 75-year-old wife was notified and suffered a fatal heart attack en route as she drove from her home to be with her husband. Tom died 15 minutes later, after his wife, and was unaware that his beloved had passed.
A similar story occurred in November when a North Carolina couple of 65 years died within hours of each other, and combined with the love and death account of Tom and Naomi Shirley, truly affirms the power of love.
The Huffington Post recounted the devastation felt by the Florida couple's family over the loss of both parents at once, however their four children are consoled by the fact that neither had to grieve the loss of their devoted. Tom and Naomi Shirley were both avid supporters of the Florida Everglades and wildlife, and were the proud grandparents of eight.
In lieu of flowers, the family of Tom and Naomi Shirley requested donations be made to the Florida Wildlife Federation.
