Marriage Mondays-Last minute Valentine's Day ideas

Valentine’s Day is tomorrow?  Do you have something planned for your spouse?  NO?!?!  What do you mean you didn’t realize you couldn’t get a reservation at your favorite Portland eatery the day before Valentine ’s Day?  Well then you better get on it!  Here are some great last-minute Valentine’s Day ideas that will make it seem like you planned for months:

1.       Write a poem-Hurry to the craft store and purchase a nice antique looking piece of scrapbook paper and a frame with a mat.  Dash back to your computer and write a poem.  It doesn’t have to be the best piece of poetry ever written, but put some feeling into it and make it personal by adding at least 2 of your favorite memories into it.  Change the font to something cute like Bradley Hand and print it out on BEST.  LET THE INK DRY for at least ten minutes before you put it in the frame.  Put an inscription on the back )even if it’s with a sharpie) including her name, your name, and the date and-VOILA!  Your spouse will swoon at the thought of romantic words from you and you’ve also created a family heirloom.  Even if Taco Bell is the only thing on the menu, this gift is sure to give you major bonus points.

2.        Dinner-Get out the nice china….or in our case, any non-Ikea plastic dish and set the table with candles and frilly little pink things from the dollar store.  Splurge and get his favorite cut of steak or her favorite handmade pasta and make the most awesome dinner.  LIGHT THE CANDLES!  Heck, even Domino’s pizza is romantic by candle light!  Bonus points for sure, but only if you light the candles.

3.       Shopping spree-If you really can’t figure something out, give her a $100 bill and escort her into her favorite store.  I know, this means you have to go shopping, but you’re the one who waited until the last minute.  For your guy, $100 and a drive over to home depot with NO INTERVENING in what he wants to spend it on will melt him.  Nothing says I love you like, “Honey, get some tools on me.”

4.       Take a drive-Get a bottle of sparkling apple cider, pack some soup and sandwiches, and head off to some magical place where you can watch the sun go down.  Play his or her favorite music, because this is a gift for them, not you.  Crown Point just east of Portland is a great place to share a sunset.

5.       Book a room-If all else fails, La Quinta by the Portland airport is comfy, and you can plan an evening of reconnecting outside of your surroundings.  If you’re REALLY good, stop by before you take your spouse and grab a dozen roses from the stand on the side of any road you go down and sprinkle the petals all over the place.  Get a bottle of champagne on the chill, and make sure to add a special ‘night gown’.  Google ‘the nutmeg commercial’ and take notes.  You are the only one who knows your spouse’s comfort level, and remember, this evening is about them, not you.  Set your own needs aside and become a pleasing machine.

Trust me, if you slacked on your Valentine’s Day duties, you are going to have toget creative, and if you do, your spouse is gonna love it!
