On Dec. 8, 2013 Marlon Gutierrez fought his way through a field of 833 competitors to become the victor of "Magic" The Gathering" Grand Prix Dallas Fort Worth. There weren't just other players standing in Gutierrez's way of winning though: He had to overcome a "twelve hour trek through the ice and freezing rain." For his unrelinquishing effort and determination Gutierrez earned a coveted trophy, title, and check for $3,500. It was his deck though, Orzhov Control which helped him get there.
I chose it (Orzhov Control) because I'm in love with Vizkopa and Pack Rat. 14 removal spells and 6 discard spells are a perfect mix for this Grand Prix.
Gutierrez's Orzhov Control leads by stripping away any potential problematic cards that your opponent may be holding with a Thoughtseize, Duress, or Sin Collector. There's a diverse removal package in the form of Devour Flesh, Hero's Downfall, Last Breath, and Ultimate Price which will take care of most creatures your adversary may cast.
You'll win by riding the back of a Blood Baron of Vizkopa, Desecration Demon, or Pack Rat to victory fueled by card advantage from Underworld Connections. Mutavault can be pivotal against other control matchups.
Gutierrez's sideboard is packed with additional discard spells, removal, and a silver bullet Pithing Needle.
