Marlise Munoz, a pregnant woman who was declared brain dead in November 2013, was finally removed from life support at John Peter Smith Hospital in Forth Worth, Texas, where she was being kept on a respirator and other medical equipment despite her family's wishes.

She was placed on life support while 14 weeks pregnant after being admitted to the hospital with a blood clot in her lungs. She reportedly died shortly upon arrival at the hospital but was placed on life support. Doctors planned to keep her on life support and keep her fetus alive until it could be delivered by cesarean section.

Marlise Munoz was removed from life support on Sun., Jan. 26, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. in accordance with a court order from a state district judge after attorneys for the woman's family and John Peter Smith Hospital confirmed that the pregnancy was non-viable, according to Salon.

Although the hospital complied with the court order, spokeswoman Jill Labbe said, "J.P.S. Health Network has followed what we believe with the demands of a state statute. From the onset, J.P.S. has said its role was not to make nor contest law but to follow it."

The state law to which the spokeswoman referred barred physicians from removing life-sustaining treatment to pregnant women. The judge who ruled that the law did not apply in this case cited the fact that the Marlise Munoz was brain-dead and legally dead., according to the New York Times.
