It’s starting to look like a two-team race for Albert Pujols. As baseball’s Winter Meetings commenced Monday, both the St. Louis Cardinals and the newly renamed Miami Marlins continued their hot pursuit of the first baseman.
Fresh off a World Series win, the Cards would of course like to keep their star first baseman with the only team he’s ever known. The Marlins, who have gotten a new stadium in addition to the new moniker, are aggressively going after talent for to make a splash their first year.
Pujols’ agent, Dan Lozano, was hard at work in Dallas on Monday. Lozano met with the Marlins more than once, though no whispers of a deal came out of it.
"We're going to talk some more," Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria told the media. "I never stop thinking and looking for things to be better. It's not that there are no limits, but there are opportunities that we want to pursue."
The Cards also met with multiple times with Lozano, and GM John Mozeliak said he has personally spoken with the slugger via phone. Mozeliak expressed that he and Pujols clarified some positions during the conversation.
The loss of Pujols would hit both the team and the city of St. Louis hard.
As Cards chairman Bill Dewiit Jr. put it, "I like our team without him. I like it a lot more with him."
