Marla Apt

The Iyengar yoga community is bestowing its leadership award on Marla Apt on Sept. 28, 2013, but she has devoted herself to spreading understanding of yoga far beyond the Iyengar tradition.

In 2008, when she was 37, Yoga Journal named her one of 21 yoga teachers younger than 40 who are shaping the future of yoga nationwide. She has written on basic poses for Yoga Journal, where she also participates in the column “Ask the Mentor Teacher”, offering advice for teachers. She also writes for Yoga International and other publications.

She has taken part in medical research studies on depression, anxiety and irritable bowel syndrome through UCLA and created the yoga therapy content for UCLA’s medical school. She is a founding director of Iyengar Yoga Therapeutics and teaches therapeutics classes at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of Los Angeles with Lisa Walford.

Marla teaches at yoga conferences, presents workshops nationwide, leads retreats and intensives worldwide, and offers teacher training in Northern and Southern California. Her upcoming intermediate/advanced class series at the LA institute sold out, but another has been scheduled for January 2014. She also teaches at YogaWorks Westwood and Santa Monica.

A certified Iyengar teacher at the Intermediate Senior 1 level, she studies annually with the Iyengar family in Pune, India.

Honor at fund-raising dinner

The leadership award, named for senior teacher Manouso Manos, was established in 2006, when it was bestowed on Karin O’Bannon, one of the founding members of the Los Angeles institute, who died in June 2013. Mary Dunn, also a founding member of the institute, was honored posthumously in 2009, and in 2010, the honor went to senior Iyengar teacher Eric Small of Beverly Hills, known for his work with multiple sclerosis, which he has lived with for more than 50 years.

Prices for attending the fund-raising dinner honoring Marla start at $108 per person and include vegetarian dinner, entertainment and a special mug. Proceeds benefit the not-for-profit Iyengar Yoga Association of Southern California and the LA institute. Most of the ticket price is tax deductible.
