U.S. Rep. Ed Markey has a strong lead in the race to succeed John Kerry as a United States senator from Massachusetts, according to a poll released on March 4.
The poll was commissioned by two organizations that support Markey, the League of Conservation Voters and NARAL Pro-Choice America.
Markey leads Stephen Lynch in the Democratic primary by 42-28 percent, according to the poll.
Markey, 66, has served in Congress since his first election to the post in 1976. Prior to his election to Congress, he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
Lynch, 57, is also a seasoned veteran of Massachusetts politics.
He was elected to Congress in 2000 after serving in the Massachusetts Senate and Massachusetts House of Representatives.
Party primaries are scheduled for April 30, with the general election set for June 25.
Among Republican hopefuls are Gabriel Gomez, Michael Sullivan and Daniel Winslow.
The winner will serve the remainder of Kerry’s term, which was to end after the 2014 election. He recently was appointed U.S. Secretary of State.
