Saturday June 21st is the longest day of the year. A perfect time to pack up the kids and head down to the Exploratorium for the first in a summertime series of Market Days. It starts at 11:00 AM and goes until 3:00 PM. It takes place on the plaza at Pier 15, and it's Free. If you want to go into the museum and play with the other exhibits, it will still cost an admission fee: $15.00 for Non-Members, $10.00 for Members, and Free for Lab Members.

This month's Market Day focus is 'Local Motion'. Interact with community scientists, artists and educators as you explore the power of paddles, pedals, and pulses of electricity. Peruse art bikes, electric skateboards, and cargo bikes. Learn the basics of bike repair, try your 'wheels' on a wheelchair obstacle course, and take a motorized pony ride. Look inside a chicken foot to see how it works. Make paper rockets with the Explorables volunteers. After all that activity, your appetite has probably overtaken your sensibilities, but fear not! You can enjoy some food to go at the Exploratorium's own SeaGlass Restaurant.

A few of the featured attractions are a bicycle powered Ferris wheel with Paul Cesewski, The Crucible's youth program learning about bicycle repair and customization, the New Wheel's electric bikes, services, and goods, Scraper Bikes decorating your own bike with paint, tape foil and wrappers, Xtra Cycle's Cargo Bikes for kids, goods, errands, and adventures. You can also take a Waterfront History Bike Tour (bring your own bike, please) with Chris Carlsson. The tour is free. There will be Boosted Boards: electric long boards that can go anywhere, and you can carry everywhere. You can try out a four person-powered car from HumanCar, Inc. that runs on your and 3 other people's efforts. Ride a motorized pony from Mission Pony and put it through it's paces. Build racer cars and hovercrafts using CDs, film canisters, and balloons with the Explorables.

There's certainly plenty to do to occupy you and the kids, or you and your sweetheart, or just you on the longest day of the year! Don't miss this opportunity for fun in the sun!

The Market Day series events are the 3rd Saturday of the month from June to October. It's a kind of mini-festival and each month it's a different theme, but they feature curated art, science demonstrations, hands-on activities, exhibits, and craft displays.
