May 15-21 is a week that offers an array of opportunities for yoga novices and experts alike with free classes and events. DC Community Yoga is hosting DC Yoga Week and aims to act as a “non-profit clearinghouse for yoga events” according to Penny Bell, board member for DC Community Yoga.
The inspiration for DC Yoga Week originally came from Theo Adamstein, previous owner of SomaFit Spa, who originated DC Spa Week. From the concept of offering free and reduced services for a one week period, DC Yoga Week was born and has instantly taken off and achieved great success thus far. “DC Yoga Week is a great stimulus for people who want to try yoga but don’t know where to start,” says Bell, which is why DC Yoga Week offers such great opportunities for those new to yoga.
Ten yoga studios are participating in DC Yoga Week and will be offering special schedules and free or reduced cost classes. Specific schedules and costs can be found at the separate studio websites, as well as, on the DC Community Yoga website:
- Bikram Yoga Capitol Hill
- Bikram Yoga Dupont
- Bikram Yoga Tenleytown
- Capitol Hill Yoga
- Circle Yoga/Budding Yogis
- Flow Yoga
- Unity Woods Yoga Center
- The Studio DC
- Stroga
- Tranquil Space Yoga
Additionally, the 2011 DC Yoga Week will feature several special anticipated events including Yoga on the Mall to kick off the week on May 15 and a Yoga Flash Mob to end the week on May 21. “Our goal is to promote and celebrate the practice of yoga. We want to keep it simple and fun and allow people to experience the joy of yoga,” says Bell. Whatever event you decide to attend, DC Yoga Week proves to be an enjoyable day out while allowing you to do something good for your body at no cost to you. For those participating in DC Yoga Week it is advised that you bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. Bell adds, “We’re looking forward to people coming out and having fun all while trying classes they’re curious about.”
