Mark your calendar for Clear Your Clutter Day 2013

Sappari Solutions Professional Organizing and Harford Community College (HCC) will host the third annual Clear Your Clutter Day on Saturday, April 27, 2013, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine. This year, for an admission fee of $5, residents can drop off a carload of items ranging from televisions to plastic grocery bags for recycling or reuse to event partners. All proceeds will go to Habit for Humanity Susquehanna.

Last year, the event drew more than 600 cars, triple that of the inaugural event in 2010. According to Nettie Owens, event coordinator and owner of Sappari Solutions, this year’s Clear Your Clutter Day process for attendees has been streamlined to address the logistical challenges associated with the overwhelming turnout. The event will feature a new traffic pattern in which cars will enter HCC Parking Lot A from Entrance 6 off of Route 22 as opposed to entering from Thomas Run Road.

“We want to be able to accommodate as many Harford County residents as possible to support getting organized and getting rid of unwanted items in a sustainable way,” says Owens.

Accepted materials at this year’s Clear Your Clutter Day include electronics and scrap metal, appliances, computers and monitors, cell phones, flattened cardboard boxes, plastic grocery bags, batteries, clothing, toys, household goods, eye glasses, hearing aids, books, like-new building supplies and tools, and like-new purses. Paper shredding will also be provided onsite, and televisions will be accepted, limit one per carload.

New this year, all proceeds raised will directly benefit the Habitat for Humanity house being built in downtown Bel Air. “We are thrilled to be able to support Habitat and our community by helping them build the Bel Air house,” says Owens. The construction for the home has already begun and is due to be completed in May 2013.

Volunteers will be on the lookout again this year for the strangest item donated. The person who drops off the strangest item will be awarded a prize after the event. Unusual items such as a logging saw, oil lamp, and a marine handbook were all seen in past events. Goody bags will be handed out to the first 300 cars.

According to Owens, “Clear Your Clutter Day would not be possible without the support of event partners and sponsors. We would like to thank those accepting goods for this year’s event, including Always Recycling, Bumble Junk, Goodwill of the Chesapeake, ShredInstead, Lions Club of Bel Air, SARC, Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna and Klein’s-ShopRite.

Sponsors for the day include Always Recycling, Bumble Junk, Harford Bank, Harford STYLE Magazine, Harford’s Heart, Downtown Bel Air Alliance, Harford County Sustainability and Recycling Office, MyWay Storage and Brand It Images.” Sponsorships are still available for the event.
