Mark you calendar for events that make a difference—for civil rights and women (Video)

Oscar-winning actor, singer, civil rights activist and humanitarian Harry Belafonte will deliver the keynote address commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. at 6:00 pm on January 28 at Northwestern University’s Pick-Staiger Concert Hall in Evanston.

The evening concludes the school’s MLK celebration of free events including Reflections on the Legacy of Dr. King on Wednesday, January 16 at the Ryan Family Atrium, Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center on 303 East Superior Street. The 6:30 pm program features performances of original poetry and music by Chicago high school and college-age students who are part of Young Chicago Authors and the G3 Youth Choir, and the 2013 MLK Art Contest awards presentation.

Northwestern is also hosting a staged reading of David Mamet’s critically-acclaimed drama Race at 2:00 pm on Monday, January 21, at the Josephine Louis Theater on 20 Arts Circle Drive in Evanston. The reading is followed by a Candlelight Vigil featuring keynote speaker Illinois State Senator Napoleon Harris at 7:00 pm at Evanston’s Alice Millar Chapel on 1870 Sheridan Road.

20% Theatre Company Chicago presents The Dark Room: A Play Workshop Event featuring two new plays: Girlfriend by Keely Flynn, directed by Amy Buckler and Residue by Stacey Lane, directed by Jamie Bragg. The production opens on January 24 and runs through January 26. This annual event introduces audience members with the cast, director, and playwright. The Chicago League of Lady Arm Wrestlers star in CLLAW XV on Saturday, February 16, at Chicago’s Logan Square Auditorium on 2539 North Kedzie Avenue. All proceeds will benefit Sideshow Theatre and its partner charity, Girl's Rock! Chicago. Tickets are $25 and include access to a three-hour open bar from 10:00 pm to 1:00 am.
