Is Mark Teixeira overpaid? The New York Yankees first baseman thinks so according to a new report from CBS Sports on Saturday (Feb. 2). When talking about the eight-year, $180 million contract he has with the Yankees, Teixeira had some poignant things to say about it. Teixeira stated that, "My first six years, before I was a free agent, I was very valuable. But there's nothing you can do that can justify a $20 million contract."
It's interesting that a star baseball players would say something like that, but his honesty has to be refreshing to the fans who have felt that most players are overpaid to simply play a game. Teixeira would later state in the interview that, "I have no problem with anybody in New York, any fan, saying you're overpaid. Because I am. We all are." While he may be posting better stats than some players in the league, there are certainly many analysts who do feel he is overpaid.
Last season for the Yankees, Teixeira had a salary of $21.125 million for the Yankees. For that salary he posted a .251 batting average with 24 home runs and 84 RBIs. He did have some injury problems during the season, but his batting average has been unimpressive in the last three years for the team. The question of whether Mark Teixeira is overpaid might come down to personal opinion, but it is very clear how he feels.
