Mark Schauer has been consistently gaining on Governor Rick Snyder in the race for the state's chief executive. In the latest EPIC-MRA poll, the Democrat has finally pulled ahead.
In the latest poll, Schauer has a 45-43 lead over Snyder. The firm surveyed 600 likely Michigan voters between Aug. 22 and 25. The poll also has a margin of error of plus or minus four points. For the same poll conducted in July, Snyder held a 46-43 edge. Both polls show a tight race within the margin of error.
Snyder's campaign has been plagued by setbacks in recent months and it has begun to show in the poll. In the EPIC-MRA poll, only 41 percent of respondents gave the Republican a favorable grade, compared to 57 percent who graded him poorly.
The Snyder campaign dismissed the well-known poll and its recent results.
“One out of every ten polls is garbage and this is certainly an example of one,” Snyder spokesperson Emily Benavides said in a press release.
Snyder has carried a significant financial advantage, thanks to his personal wealth, well-connnected out-of-state donors and with the assistance of the Republican Governors Association. To Schauer's credit, he's kept the race competitive, and now pulled ahead, despite not having the same financial muster. This month, he began running his own campaign commercials and also has been helped by the Democratic Governors Association.
