One of the factors that heavily contributed to the billion dollar success of “Marvel’s The Avengers” was Mark Ruffalo as Doc Bruce Banner, belted by gamma rays, turns into The Hulk. That of course prompted intergalactic speculation on whether Marvel would reverse its position on another standalone Hulk movie, following the underperformance of both Ang Lee’s “Hulk” and Louis Leterrier’s highly entertaining sequel/reboot “The Incredible Hulk,” which did better but still paled in comparison to the box office success of “Iron Man,” released the same summer.
Ruffalo has weighed in on this himself, via Twitter, and the bottom line is don’t expect a third standalone “Hulk” movie anytime soon.
“A lot of folks have been asking about the Next Hulk,” Ruffalo says. “The next time you see my Hulk it will be in the Avengers2. No plans for stand alone.”
Perhaps that got too much wailing and gnashing of teeth from Hulk fans. Ruffalo was quick to add a soft towel to what might have interpreted as too much of a bucket of cold water poured on the hopes of the faithful:
“I am not giving up on another stand alone HULK. But it’s not in the works right now. One never knows what the future will bring.”
And finally, the critically lauded actor has this to say:
“Just to be totally clear. I did not say there was not going to ever be a stand alone Hulk film. I said there wasn’t one in the works now.”
So hang in there, true believers. The Hulk is alive and well, but he’s going to sticking with The Avengers, at least for the foreseeable future.
