In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, actor Mark Ruffalo discussed how his take on Bruce Banner in The Avengers will differ from earlier portrayals in film. Outside of the hit television series in the late 70s/early 80s starring Bill Bixby, the character of Bruce Banner has been portrayed by two different actors in the past 10 years. First there was Eric Bana who starred in Ang Lee’s The Hulk and then there was The Incredible Hulk, which starred Edward Norton and served as the characters initial entry into Marvel Comics’ cinematic universe.
“I don’t think Bruce Banner’s any longer trying to run from the inevitable, which is his voice, and that’s a kind of maturation that all of us go through,” Mr. Ruffalo says. “At this point, I think he’s ready to turn and face this beast that he’s partially created and try to integrate it into his life and use it for the good that he intended it to be used for.”
“There’s a lot of world-weary charm in the character,” Mr. Ruffalo says, “a lot of sense of humor about himself and where he finds himself. He has this maturation that I think makes him ready to accept whatever his fate may be.”
Directed by Joss Whedon, The Avengers assemble in theaters on May 4, 2012 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and Cobie Smulders.
