About a week ago, UK-based Magic retailer Manaleak caused a speculative panic in EDH and eternal format circles when it posted the following message on its Facebook page:
Just a heads up. It now seems that the Commander 2013 product due for release on 1st November is going to be allocated. The allocation will be based on WPN ratings, so will probably be similar to Modern Masters allocation figures.
Basically what this means is that the supply for Commander 2013 is going to be very limited.
Apparently the demand for Commander 2013 has now been anticipated to be a lot higher than what is being printed."
Despite the assurances of cooler heads that Commander 2013 would have just as big of a print run as the original Commander because EDH is such a popular format, that the allocations of all "special" Magic products are based on WPN ratings so that stores that serve a larger customer base get more, and that there were specific, format-based reasons why Modern Masters had a low print run, the rumor persisted that it would be impossible to get one's hands on Commander 2013, and that prices would be ridiculously magnified.
One Tumblr user decided to ask for clarification from the highest higher-up immediately available - Mark Rosewater. When coleman984 asked, "There are rumors swirling around the net that Commander 2013 will be limited supply akin to that of Modern Masters is this true?" his response was:
Absolutely not. We will reprint Commander 2013 if the current supply does not meet demand.
In other words: You shouldn't have to pay more than the MSRP if you would like to get your hands on the new EDH-focused cards. This news comes as a relief to both EDH and Legacy players alike.
