In a TV Guide interview published on Oct. 15, NCIS lead actor and Executive Producer Mark Harmon, Showrunner and Executive Producer Gary Glasberg, and actor/director Michael Weatherly provide some color on the upcoming flashback episode 'Once a Crook' airing Oct. 22.
Fans will get a further glimpse into what makes Special Agent Tony DiNozzo (Weatherly) tick when his days as a cop are revisited in episode five. The flashback may give more insight as to why Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Harmon) would someday tap DiNozzo to be his second in command.
In the new interview by Chris Willman, Glasberg said, "You get to see some formative moments for Tony that got him to the point where he is now...taking it from the cop stage to the detective stage to ultimately what drew him to NCIS."
Weatherly adds, "There's a reason Gibbs picked Tony to be in his world. We saw part of that in the 'Baltimore' episode (season 8 episode 22), but what this episode shows is more how these guys have a shared understanding of the job."
Harmon's alter-ego Gibbs will not be seen much in 'Once a Crook,' which is focused on DiNozzo's formative years. But flashback episodes are clearly a favorite of the show's star:
"By the time we started doing flashbacks, which was a number of years in, we'd earned it. Certainly as an actor you have more to grip on to...There's still a ton of mystery to the characters, and still a lot of growth, too." - Mark Harmon
Not to be left out of the line of questioning, the topic of Cote de Pablo's sudden departure (Ziva David) came up. Glasberg remarked that he "couldn't be more enthusiastic, honestly, with where we're headed this season."
When discussing how the Ziva-less season is progressing, Weatherly seemed optimistic, offering, "It's been an incredible experience to feel everybody lock into a newish rhythm that feels surprisingly comfortable and classic NCIS."
