I do not know Mark Driscoll. I stood beside him at a speaking engagement at Southeastern Seminary once; that’s about it. I have friends who know him well, and one buddy of mine actually works for him. But I don’t know the man.
His public persona I know well, and as per usual, controversy accompanies Mark Driscoll. The publication of his “Real Marriage” book will not change that perception. I have not read the book yet, so this is neither a formal or informal review nor is it a critique either recommending or eschewing the book. It is however an article noting that discussions around the book are already reaching a fever pitch.
From the reviews, it appears that Driscoll and his wife Grace have undertaken not only a discussion of marriage, but they also have ventured into unchartered territories for evangelical Christians on the topic of sex (not necessarily a bad thing) and in their interpretation of scripture (their points and grids hotly debated).
While some reviews are scathing, others point to a great helpfulness within the pages. The upcoming seminars surrounding it will continue to fan the flames of discussion, and if they are successful (in attendance and application), they may very well have a greater impact than the pages themselves.
But for now, I offer to you only the book for your consideration. Also included are several reviews from all sides of the aisle. Look for mine soon.
