2013 years after the coming of Jesus, much of the world awaits his return. But who was this historical Jesus of Nazareth? In the gospel of John we are told: "The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--"
Producer, Mark Burnett (The Voice, Survivor, Shark Tank, The Bible), along with his wife, Roma Downey, actress and producer (Touched By An Angel, The Bible) believe this message is so important they decided to share the story of Jesus once again, with a whole new generation, in their latest piece, The Son of God, which - as Charisma News reported on Thursday - is set to hit theaters nationwide, February 28.
Downey and Burnett:
"We responded to an overwhelming demand for the greatest story ever told to be seen as a shared experience on the big screen. The result is a beautiful stand-alone movie. It's the story of Jesus for a whole new generation."
The generation that Downey and Burnett are referring to is the generation that has been bombarded with messages denying the historicity of Jesus with films such as The God Who Wasn't There. It is the generation that has seen the philosophy of people like Richard Dawkins gain considerable traction around the world. Additionally, this is the very generation that witnesses, daily, through the media, the mounting lawsuits by atheists, secularists, and humanists, who seem intent on removing any mention of Jesus/God from American culture.
Nevertheless, The Son of God, as Downey and Burnett expressed, is a film that was "made with love" and a film that "unequivocally" shares who Jesus is, which appears consistent with the most recognized verse in the bible:
"For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life." - John 3:16
Hollywood's most recent and notable film highlighting the message of Christ is Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, which was a huge box-office success, grossing over $600 million worldwide, released in 2004.
What kind of success will Burnett's Son of God have? Time will tell.
