The University of Minnesota men’s hockey team announced the teams and matchups for the Mariucci Classic on Monday afternoon. Ferris State, Colgate and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) will take part in the annual holiday tradition set for January 3-4 at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis.
Ferris State and RPI will kick off the 23rd Annual Mariucci Classic at 4 pm CT on Friday, Jan. 3 with the Gophers taking on Colgate at 7 pm. The winners of both Friday matchups will face off on Saturday as will the losing teams, but there is a unique scheduling wrinkle to take note of. Minnesota will play in the 7 pm game on Saturday no matter the result of Friday’s games with the first game of the day set for 4 pm.
The Mariucci Classic has also been well-known for its tournament format, including a shootout to decide tie games after a five-minute overtime, but with the 2013 season seeing the Big Ten implementing the shootout, the holiday tournament format will not be foreign to Gopher hockey and college hockey fans alike.
