Cape Cod is celebrating Maritime Days throughout May, and the festival offers many free or inexpensive ways to learn more about how land and sea have created this unique vacation place.
Nearly 75 events are on the agenda, from lighthouse and walking tours, nautical art exhibits, and lectures on maritime lore to boat-building exhibits, village festivals, and kayaking excursions.
Events of particular interest to budget travelers include:

The Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center will offer free guided tours of the center with a park ranger Wednesdays through Sundays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Discover the history of the Canal and see how the Army Corps of Engineers ensures safe navigation through the waterway.

The Dennis Historical Society invites the public to a free Maritime Open House May 8 and 9, noon-4 p.m., at the West Dennis Graded School, 67 School St., West Dennis. Phyllis Horton will present an exhibit titled "Dennis Mariners in the Civil War." A video presentation of the "Story of the Shiverick Shipyard" will be shown at 1 p.m. each day.

On May 9 and 16, between 1 and 4 p.m., you can take a guided tour of Nauset Light , in North Eastham. Donations are welcome. And on May 15, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. there will be an open house with tours at Nobska Lighthouse in Woods Hole.

A free Celebration of the Sea Concert will be held May 22 at 4 p.m. at Falmouth Academy, 7 Highfield Drive, Falmouth. Presented by the Revels Repertory Company of Cambridge, the concert will feature music, song, and dance of the 18th and 19th century, telling the story of the whaling era in Massachusetts.

May 22 is also opening day for Harbor Your Arts Artist Shanties on Hyannis Harbor. Visitors to the seven harborside shanties can enjoy photography, painting, handmade jewelry, ceramics, sculpture, stained glass, scrimshaw, mariner knot work, and more created by local artists and artisans.
