The Academy Award-winning French actress will replace Natalie Portman in the role of the ambitious Lady Macbeth. Michael Fassbender has already signed on to play the title role, a Scottish lord who will do anything to become king.
Directed by Justin Kurzel (The Snowtown Murders), Macbeth will retain Shakespeare's original dialogue for the dark tragedy set in 11th century Scotland. The script was written by Todd Louiso and Jacob Koskoff (The Marc Pease Experience). Iain Canning and Emile Sherman (The King's Speech) are producing for See-Saw Films.
Cotillard is best known for her Oscar-winning role in 2007's La Vie en Rose and the blockbuster films Inception and The Dark Knight Rises. She recently starred in The Immigrant with Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner, and she is currently filming the animated feature The Little Prince and the French-language film Two Days, One Night.
Production for Macbeth is scheduled to begin in the UK later this year.
