'Mario Kart 8' gets May release for Wii U, partial 2014 lineup revealed

Nintendo confirmed a release date Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U during a financial meeting in Japan on Thursday. It also released a partial lineup of first-party and third-party games coming to the home console and Nintendo 3DS over the next year.

While discussing the Wii U Gamepad, Nintendo president Saturo Iwata announced that Mario Kart 8 will be released this May according to a Wall Street Journal liveblog of the event. The company head said he will make sure that this won't be a one-off boost in momentum as the company has other games planned for the year.

A supplementary document (PDF) released Nintendo shows the following seven first-party titles for the Wii U in 2014 for North America:

  • Wii Fit U
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - Feb. 21
  • Mario Kart 8 - May
  • Hyrule Warriors - 2014
  • Super Smash Bros. for Wii U - 2014
  • Bayonetta 2 - 2014
  • A brand new title developed by Monotlith Software Inc.- 2014

The Legend of Zelda, Yarn Yoshi and Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem still do not have release dates.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo 3DS has the following 2014 first-party lineup.

  • Bravely Default - Feb. 7
  • Professor Layton and the Azan Legacy - Feb. 28
  • Yoshi's New Island - March 14
  • Disney Magical World - April 11
  • Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS - 2014
  • Kirby: Triple Deluxe - 2014
  • Mario Golf: World Tour - 2014

On the third party side, Nintendo has confirmed the following for the Wii U.

  • The Amazing Spider-Man 2
  • Scram Kitty and his Buddy on Rails
  • Armillo
  • Wooden Sen'SeY
  • 1001 Spikes
  • Teslagrad
  • The LEGO Movie Videogame
  • LEGO The Hobbit
  • Shovel Knight

And this is what the Nintendo 3DS third-part lineup looks like.

  • Cut the Rope: Triple Threat
  • The Amazing Spider-Man 2
  • Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars
  • Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return
  • Siesta Fiesta
  • One Piece: Romance Dawn
  • 1001 Spikes
  • Moon Chronicles
  • Retro City Rampage
  • The LEGO Movie Videogame
  • LEGO The Hobbit
