Mario Kart 8 DLC? It's happening

The Mario Kart franchise has never been one to dip into additional content once released. During the era of DLC, Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7 have been released, and neither have seen DLC. Including additional content could have added life to those games, but it seems Nintendo has caught up to the world in offering three different DLC packs for Mario Kart 8. Due out in the fall and in the spring, two packs will bring some crossover content to the series, while also delivering new content.

New DLC bring character to the track

The first pack will be available August 27th for $7.99, or both can be had for $11.99, with the other due in 2015. The first pack will feature three new characters, four vehicles, and 8 courses. The courses, alone, are worth the price. Along with these packs, a previously announced game update goes live the same day. This update includes the three free Mercedes-Benz cars. They consist of the modern GLA, the 300 SL Roadster from the 1950s, and the legendary Silver Arrow of the 1930s.

"More than 1 million Wii U owners in the United States alone are already enjoying the fun of Mario Kart 8. Mario Kart 8 already includes the largest number of characters, karts and options of any Mario Kart game to date, and these amazing expansion packs give players even more choices.”

-Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing

The characters in the first pack will be Link, Tanooki Mario, and Cat Peach. The courses included will be classic courses like Wario's Gold Mine from MK Wii, as well as new courses that take place in The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing. Players can expect the Blue Falcon kart from the F-Zero franchise in the first pack, as well. The second pack will includ Villager, Isabelle, and Dry Bowser, in terms of characters. Mario Kart 8 owners who snag both for $11.99 on August 27 will get acces to eight new colors of Yoshi and Shy Guy immediately. This will all be done via the eShop on the Wii U, itself.
