The Marine Corps doesn't even have enough money to buy bullets...
America's First to Fight is fighting mad over a decision by the Obama Administration to do away with the beloved Dress Blues Cover (hat) and replace it with a decidedly "girly" or even more insulting, one critic described it as looking particularly "French" in appearance, as reported by The Washington Times on Oct. 24, 2013.
Marines have a particular way of speaking that civilians or even members of the other Branches of the Armed Forces don't always understand.
"Lollygag", "ditty bop," "old salt" and "s**t bird" usually draw quizzical looks from those unfortunate enough to never have served in the world's premier fighting force. Case in point: Marines don't wear hats. They wear covers.
And the amphibious warrior elite take their uniforms serious. Some would even say fanatically serious when it comes to gig-lines, razor-sharp creases and never so much as even loosening their ties when in public, regardless of how hot the weather is.
With their near-religious love of Corps, Marines are in a decidedly "call-in-arty-and-level-the-whole-(blanking)-village" frame of mind over the Obama Administration's decision to replace the beloved "Barracks Cover"-style Dress Blues Cover with a uni-sex uniform article of headgear that's been cited by The Washington Times as "feminine" according to more than a few anonymous Marines.
The new uni-sex cover also has a more than passing resemblance to Women Marines-only issued Blues Cover the Lady Leathernecks have been wearing for decades. Many claim that the ladies lid is exactly what the uni-sex cover is.
As one senior Marine, speaking in civilianese decried:
We don’t even have enough funding to buy bullets and the DoD [Department of Defense] is pushing to spend $8 million on covers that look like women’s hats.
Not quite done yet, the seasoned Teufelhunden said of the soon to be disgraced Devil Dogs:
The Marines deserve better.
It makes them look ridiculous.
As one individual wrote to The Marine Corps Times (not officially affiliated with the US government) regarding the smaller, slimmer cover:
The new cover looks too French, and the last people we want to associate our Marines with would be the French military.
Only A Marine Can Rescue The Marines...
Yet there is hope for America's Marines. The 35th Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James "Jim" Amos reportedly has the final say-so later this week.
Gen. Amos is the first ever non-infantryman to ever be appointed to the Corps top position.
An aviator his entire career, Amos was nominated by Barack Obama to head the Corps in 2010.
