The Mariners and Cubs have made a trade AP File Photo
The Seattle Mariners seem to be involved in every big deal of this off season. They have added a ton of talent to a team that won 85 games in 2009. On top of trading for Cliff Lee, signing Chone Figgins, they have now traded for Chicago Cubs OF Milton Bradley.
Before we go any further let us look at the details of this trade:
• Seattle Mariners get OF Milton Bradley
• Chicago Cubs get Six million bucks, and RHP Carlos Silva
Now the Cubs have been looking to deal Bradley since a major blowup he had with the Chicago media last fall, for which he was suspended the rest of the 2009 season. Bradley’s only season in Chicago was a miserable one, added to the Cubs lineup he batted just .231 from the left side and .257 overall. He had just 12 home runs, and 40 RBI but the Mariners are betting that a change of scenery will do him some good.
In 2008 with Texas, Bradley hit .321 and had an on base percentage of .436. Now that he is joining a lineup that will feature Figgins, as well as Ichiro and Ken Griffey Junior, the Mariners look to be the early favorites to win the American League Central.
The Cubs, who were merely dumping Bradley, get Silva in return who went 1-3 with an 8.80 ERA in 2009. The six million bucks help, but the Cubs are looking at this as addition by subtraction. They are rid of the malcontent Bradley, and they pocketed some cash.
