Late this afternoon, the Department of Defense announced the first combat loss in Afghanistan since Jan. 16, 2013.
Staff Sgt. Jonathan D. Davis, 34, of Kayenta, Ariz., died Feb. 22, 2013, while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
Staff Sgt. Davis was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 32nd Georgian Liaison Team, Regimental Combat Team 7, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif., and was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom at the time of his death.
This troop loss is only the fourth since the beginning of the year, due in part to operational tempo in Afghanistan at this time. Insurgent activity is often limited in inclimate weather.
Funeral arrangements have not been released by the Davis family.
