Tuesday afternoon, Marine Caleb Medley, 26, plunged to his death in a training exercise near the Perris Valley Skydiving facility in Riverside County, Calif.
Authorities have confirmed that he was with an elite unit based at Camp Pendleton. According to CBS News he was from Burlington, Colo.
No other Marines were injured in the incident that remains under investigation.
Local firefighting units responded to the emergency call; while the published report from the local Press Enterprise did not confirm it, it appears that Medley was unresponsive when they arrived.
Several people reported having heard a loud noise associated with the incident.
This is not the first fatality at the Perris Valley Skydiving facility. Medley's death brings to 15 the number of deaths since 2000.
No rank has been listed for Medley.
Perris Valley Skydiving reports that this drop zone records about 140,000 jumps annually.
