Marine Brevet wins senior title at WOGA Classic, Texans sweep junior division

WOGA favorite Katelyn Ohashi and France's Marine Brevet persevered to win the junior and senior titles at the 2010 WOGA Classic.

Ohashi overcame two falls during her first routine of the night on floor, coming up short on her new opening series of front handspring, front layout to immediate double front and also sitting down on a 2.5 twist to punch front late in her routine.

But in the WOGA style taught by coach Valeri Liukin, she was able to put the falls behind her and not let it affect the routines that followed.

Ohashi scored 14.5 for her uneven bar routine and a whopping 15.9 on her best event, balance beam, where she delighted the crowd with difficult and elegant work, ending with a 56.85, the highest score in either age division. (not too bad considering the two falls). WOGA's Madison Kocian finished second, winning vault (14.95) and floor (14.5).

Houston's Ariana Guerra made it a Texan sweep in the junior division, unveiling some new upgrades (full twisting double layout off bars). She finished third (55.4), followed by Nadia Comaneci Invitational winner Mackenzie Brannan of Texas's Capital Gymnastics (53.75; third-highest score on bars with 13.65 but only 10th on floor with 12.8).

Canada's Victoria Moors landed low on her double double tuck on floor and had a low beam score (13.1) to finish fifth.

Brevet, the reigning national champion of France, stayed consistent and scored 55.25 to hold off the challenge from second place finisher Brandie Jay of GK Elite in Colorado.

Brevet took first on beam (14.35) and recorded top three finishes on all events. Jay, who has committed to Georgia for NCAA gymnastics, was the senior champion on vault (14.5). WOGA's Briley Casanova was third overall (54.15) and also took second on floor (13.3).

2010 WOGA senior champion Sophia Lee finished fourth this year (53.65). Canada's Anysia Unick, who won the senior division of last weekend's Nadia Comaneci Invitational, finished fifth and had the top score on floor (13.6).

2008 Junior U.S. champion Jordyn Wieber fell from balance beam on her front aerial, back handspring, layout series but still finished fifth on the event (13.6), where she also unveiled a new 2.5 twist dismount, done from two back handsprings. Wieber won uneven bars in the senior division with a clean bar routine (14.9).

WOGA's Ivana Hong, who is coming back from a torn ACL suffered a year ago, was initially scheduled to compete but withdrew.
