Marin Humane Society seeks donations for holiday pet assistance program

Marin pets need your help this holiday season! The Marin Humane Society is experiencing a significant increase in requests for pet food and supplies from animal guardians, including low-income seniors, people living with HIV/AIDS, and those in hospice care. Donations from the public will be used to fill gift bags for the Humane Society’s SHARE (Special Human-Animal Relationships) clients as well as for local human needs organizations, including Canal Alliance, Novato Human Needs Center, Ritter House, San Geronimo Cultural Center and West Marin Senior Services. Donations may be delivered to the Marin Humane Society at 171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd., Novato.

Darlene Blackman, community programs manager says

Requests for pet food and supplies have risen steadily over the past several years—and by more than twenty percent during the last year alone. With the public’s help, we can make the holiday season brighter for hundreds of Marin’s less fortunate companion animals and their guardians.

Of particular need are small bags of dry dog and cat food, toys and treats. Financial contributions for the SHARE program are also welcome and will be used to purchase additional gift items.

The Marin Humane Society’s SHARE program—celebrating 25 years in 2011—provides a lifeline for more than 250 low-income people and their pets in times of need. Assistance is offered in the form of pet food, veterinary care, home visits, and emergency boarding for pets in the event of hospitalization of the client.

Holiday deliveries will be made in mid-December, but donations for the SHARE program are accepted year-round.
