Marilyn Manson Plays The Villain...Again.

After scaring the hell out of Middle America for nearly a decade, longtime shock rocker Marilyn Manson took a break from writing after his 2009 album “The High End of Low”. Manson’s artistic output took a little bit of a turn, as his musical ventures were put on the back burner as he delved in various art projects, and creating his own brand of absinthe.

But just as family groups and conservative America had almost forgotten about Manson, the rocker gave fans another reason to rejoice. Manson released his ninth album, “Born Villain” back in May of 2012 and it’s his first self-released album after spending his entire career on Interscope Records.

The music itself easily surpasses the ho-hum material on “Low” and may not be as aggressive as his early work, but it adds a level of understated cool throughout. Songs like “No Direction” and “Slo-mo-tion” adds a smoky industrial burn to the music. Actor Johnny Depp adds his vocals to Manson’s cover of Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain”. It is easily Manson’s best album since 2003’s “The Golden Age of Grotesque”.

Going into the next chapter of Manson’s career, the man is certainly keeping busy since the release of “Villain”. After hitting the European festival circuit in the summer, Manson did some dates with Rob Zombie this past fall. Things got a little dicey at the Detroit stop when Manson made comments about Zombie, and a brief firestorm started in hard rock circles.

With that mess behind him, Manson comes back inside for his winter tour- which runs through February 23rd. The tour features the up and coming shock rockers Butcher Babies, which features former Detroiter Carla Harvey among it’s ranks. The tour hits Detroit when Manson brings the theatrics to the Fillmore Detroit on Tuesday, January 22nd. If you haven’t had a chance to ever see Manson, he still puts on one of the best shows in all of rock music.

Marilyn Manson plays at the Fillmore Detroit on Tuesday, January 22nd. Tickets range between $25-$45 and are available at livenation.com. Additional tour dates and info can be found at www.marilynmanson.com.
