It is very important for American citizens and voters to put names and faces on our government when requesting accountability. Today, Marilyn Tavenner was put on the stand to appear before the House Ways and Means Committee.
Who is she? First, she is a nurse with a Masters degree in Public Health. She was Secretary of Health and Human Resources in the Cabinet of Governor Tim Kaine from 2006 - 2010. When Dr. Don Berwick resigned from HHS at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Marilyn Tavenner was appointed as his replacement. That was in 2011.
Her resume and qualifications are impressive.
“Marilyn B. Tavenner (born May 31, 1951) is Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. She became Acting Administrator following the resignation of Dr. Donald M. Berwick in December 2011, after serving as the agency's Principal Deputy Administrator. Prior to her original appointment to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, she served as Secretary of Health and Human Resources in the Cabinet of Virginia Governor Tim Kaine from 2006 to 2010. From 1981 to 2005, she was employed by Hospital Corporation of America, beginning as a nurse at Richmond, Virginia-based Johnston-Willis Hospital eventually becoming Chief Executive Officer of the hospital in 1993. In 2001, she became President of HCA's Central Atlantic Division, and was later appointed Group President of Outpatient Services before resigning from HCA in 2005. She earned B.S. in nursing and M.H.A. degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Tavenner was confirmed as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on May 15, 2013.
So, the administration put her forward to apologize. That is admirable, but her boss, Kathleen Sebelius is the one who told the committee and the entire nation that the system would be ready and it was not. Maybe having Marilyn on point is a set up for her eventually taking over HHS.
Kathleen Sebelius can run, but she cannot hide forever.
“Obama health official apologizes for broken HealthCare.gov

Marilyn Tavenner, the head of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, apologized Tuesday in front of a Congressional panel for the botched launch of HealthCare.Gov.
“I want to apologize to [the American people] that the website has not worked as well as it should,” she said. “We know how desperately you need affordable coverage… this initial experience has not lived up to our expectations or the expectations of the American people and it is not acceptable.”
Tavenner was the first Obama administration official to face angry Congressional critics over the bungled healthcare rollout. Her agency is overseeing the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.”
