An 88-year-old Marietta woman was killed Tuesday evening, and her passenger critically injured, after the car she was driving turned into the path of an unmarked Marietta police SUV.

The deadly crash happened around 5:45 p.m. on Powder Springs Road near Bellemeade Road, according to Marietta police.

Investigators said Ms. Evelyn Lyle was driving northbound on Powder Springs Road in a 1995 Oldsmobile Cierra when she failed to yield to oncoming traffic and turned left into the path of a 2013 Ford Explorer driven by Maj. Cliff Kelker.

“The front of the Explorer struck the right front quarter panel of the Cierra,” police spokesman Officer David Baldwin said.

Ms. Lyle and her passenger, Mr. Michael Lyle, 66, were rushed to WellStar Kennestone Hospital where Ms. Lyle succumbed to her injuries, Officer Baldwin said.

Mr. Lyle is currently listed in critical condition. Major Kelker was not injured in the wreck.

No charges have been filed in the wreck, which is still under investigation.
