Maricopa County GOP censures John McCain for legislating like a liberal Democrat

On Saturday, the Maricopa County, Ariz., Republican Party censured Sen. John McCain for his “betrayal” of party values, BixPac Review reported.

McCain has been criticized by many conservatives as a "Republican in name only," or "RINO," but Saturday's move seemed to make the designation somewhat official.

The former GOP presidential nominee was blasted for supporting liberal policies, backing liberal nominees and for “assaults on the Constitution and 2nd amendment,” according to the resolution.

The resolution also called McCain's record "disastrous and harmful to Arizona and the United States."

McCain was also excoriated for campaigning like a conservative but flip-flopping on issues like the border security fence.

The county GOP also noted that McCain "has abandoned our core values and has been eerily silent against liberals, yet publicly reprimands conservatives in his own party."

The resolution concludes by saying:

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that until he consistently champions our party’s platform and values, we, the Republican leadership in Arizona will no longer support, campaign for or endorse John McCain as our U.S. senator.

The vote was not even close -- 1,169 voted for censure, compared to just 358 voting against it.

A. J. LaFaro, chairman of the county GOP, observed that McCain has also been censured by two other counties -- Mohave County Republican Central Committee on Jan. 4 and the Apache County Republican Committee on Jan. 9.

McCain, the Arizona Daily Independent said, is widely unpopular, but but has a political machine known to crush any opposition.
