Maria Kang debunks common dieting misconceptions

Maria Kang addresses her fans to debunk some of the most common misconceptions about weight loss and living an active life. On Jan 1st, she posted on Facebook five ‘fitness vents’ as she called them. These tips can right in time for the New Year, too.

The first misconception she wanted to address was the one size fits all and all, ‘women should eat 1200 calories’ advice. The fact is, most people need much more than 1200 calories. In order for your BMR (basal metabolic rate) to be 1200 or 1300, you would be very close to your goal weight. It is ridiculous to cut someone’s calories from 3000-3500 calories to 1200 a day. Most people should reduce their calories by 500 calories a day. For a 200 pound woman, 2000 calories a day would mean she would lose one pound a week.

The second point she made was regarding protein shakes. So many people believe a protein shake is required to lose weight. That is completely false. Protein shakes can help you meet your protein ratio everyday; however, so can eating more eggs or chicken. Real foods will be more absorbed in your body than any protein shake, according to the experts.

Heart rate monitors are frequents touted as being required to lose weight. This is completely untrue, according to Maria Kang. Maria Kang explained how to check your heart rate without using a heart rate monitor.

Just take your two fingers and find your neck pulse. Count how many beats your heart makes in 15 seconds and multiply by 4. That's your BPM (beats per minute). You want to stay within your target heart rate (THR) which is 220-age x 60-80%.

Exercise is very important, but you do not need a gym membership or expensive DVD’s. Just make sure you are very active, above your target heart rate for 20-30 minutes every day. You can achieve this by running, walking, swimming or high intensity training (HIIT).

Maria Kang claimed that the most popular question she is asked is “how do I get rid of the belly?” She went on to say, you can't spot reduce belly fat until you reduce your overall body fat. Spot reducing without lowering your body fat is not possible. The easiest way to reduce your body fat is by weight lifting or strength training.

These misconceptions are so often not questioned or thought, maybe it is not completely right. People spend money thinking, they need this or that to lose weight. In truth, all you need is determination and the will to change your eating habits. If you have the will to change, changing your sedentary lifestyle to an active one becomes easy.
