Last night during the season premiere of "Dancing with the Stars" season 11, Margaret Cho and Louis Van Amstel made a major miscalculation which left them at the bottom of the six teams dancing the Viennese waltz and tied for last place with two other couples in the combined V. waltz and cha cha cha standings.
Viennese waltz
Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough (8,8,8) 24
Brandy Norwood and Maksim Chmerkovskiy (7,8,8) 23
Rick Fox and Cheryl Burke (8, 7, 7) 22
Kurt Warner and Anna Trebunskaya (7,5,7) 19
Michael Bolton and Chelsie Hightower (6,5,5) 16
Margaret Cho and Louis van Amstel (5,5,5) 15
Was it van Amstel or Cho or a toxic combination of the two? It's hard to say, but Cho ended up being dressed more modestly than Bristol Palin in a black dress that covered her many tattoos that looked somewhat Chinese inspired.
The dress included two long attached scarves that had poles inserted in them and were used to make the scarves act as wings. Cho used them to wrap and sometimes humorously encase the two dancers. Her mugging and make faces that looked like a stereotypically startled and angrily befuddled F.O.B., didn't work well with the music and especially for her first outing.
What's funny about comic dances in musicals and plays, is that it's very clear that this is meant to be funny. In this case, it wasn't clear if Cho could actually do V. waltz properly. The couple danced to Queen's "We Are the Champions."
Bruno Tonioli asked what the hell was going on? "It resembled the waltz" but "it was like 'The Last Airbender.'" I agree with Tonioli when he said, "It didn't work."
Carrie Ann Inaba commented it was "a very bold choice." I would have liked to see you "express your inner beauty."
Len Goodman said "I was really encouraged at the start." All the comedic stuff wasn't necessary.
Cho and van Amstel were tied with David Hasselhoff and Kym Johnson and Mike Sorrentino and Karina Smirnoff with 15 points. Audience voting is critical for these three teams.
You can still vote for Cho online until 11 a.m. on the East Coast or 8 a.m. on the West Coast.
