After being knocked out in one of the biggest upsets of the year, Abner Mares wants to avenge his first career loss against the now hot topic that is Jhonny Gonzalez.
This past Saturday, coming in as a heavy favorite against Gonzales, Mares was caught right away in the first round by a quick and sharp left hook by Gonzales that dropped him. After getting up from the canvas, Mares was ambushed by Gonzales who was able to drop him once again, forcing the referee to stop the bout. Just like that, the featherweight division was turned upside down.
In the post fight interview, Mares gave no excuse and gave all credit to Gonzales for the win. When it came to what was next for Mares, he said he would take some time off to spend with his family before deciding what was next.
With an immediate rematch clause in the contract, Mares has since changed his mind and now wants to exercise that clause and fight Gonzales before the end of 2013.
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, who promotes Mares, had this to say, "He has a rematch clause and wants to do it before the end of the year. Abner called me himself and said, 'I want to set the record straight and exercise my rematch option.
With Mares focused on a rematch before the end of the year, Golden Boy now has to find a date and a venue for Showtime to host this fight on. Unlike Gonzales, Mares is one of Golden Boy’s most talented, invested in, and promising fighters, so have no doubt that they will find a way to give their fighter what he wants, when he wants.
Before the upset by Gonzales, Golden Boy Promotions seemed focused on their plans to match Mares against undefeated up and coming star Leo Santa Cruz, who was featured in the undercard bout the same night. With Mares loosing, the fight against Santa Cruz is now in the back burner.
Will Mares be able to avenge his loss against Gonzales? Or will the same faith of Gonzales's huge punching power once against prove too much for him? Thankfully, with Mares's new demand for a rematch, it looks like we will get to find out sooner rather than later.
