As with so many celebrities, actors and musicians, it seems like it all began in Nashville, Tennessee. The music, the fluttering of eyelashes, the pounding of hearts. Academy-award nominated Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford of Mumford and Sons, falling in love. And, today, everywhere, all over the world, is the sound of hearts breaking.
Earlier today, April 21st, 2012, Carey Mulligan, age 26, and Marcus Mumford, age 24, got married in a very down-to-earth ceremony in front of friends and family including stars Colin Firth, Sienna Miller and Jake Gyllenhaal on a quaint country farm in Somerset, England. The weather was cool and beautiful, typical of an English spring day. According to The Metro News, Adele, who has won six Grammys and a Brit Award for her second album 21, was to perform at the wedding and reception. Adele has always wanted to work with Mumford and Sons and both Carey and Marcus are huge fans of Adele. (Adele’s performance has not been confirmed).
Carey Mulligan, who nabbed an Oscar nomination in 2010 for her portrayal of a schoolgirl coming of age in An Education, first hooked up with Marcus Mumford when he was performing a show in Nashville, Tennessee in 2011 at the War Memorial Auditorium. Jake Gyllenhaal trekked to Nashville for the show and brought along his co-star, Carey Mulligan, starring with him in the film, Brothers. She, too, was a fan of the band that hailed from her hometown of West London. Apparently, Carey and Mumford knew each other as children, but had lost touch with one another throughout the years.
After Mumford and Son’s concert, Marcus and Carey went with a group of friends for dinner at the City House Restaurant, an Italian spot in Nashville’s Germantown neighborhood. Then, Marcus invited Carey to a private, secret show in the basement of his friend’s home, local guitarist Mike Harris, band member of The Apache Relay. Harris and his friends have supported Mumford and Sons over the years – long before they were famous – striking up a close friendship. And even after Mumford and Sons gained international fame, (they earned a Best New Artist Grammy nomination in 2011), they remained good friends with Mike. “It’s really incredible to all of us and a huge blessing to witness our friends become successful, but more than that, it’s a huge lesson to meet successful people who live out humble lives,” said Mike Harris about the gig in his basement. "It's good to know they will never be too cool to play in a dingy basement.”
At the end of the night there were just the musicians, Jake, Carey, and the Mumford boys left in Mike's basement. They ate pizza and just played music. And Jake picked up a guitar and Carey joined in on Amazing Grace.
The rest is history. Marcus and Carey announced their engagement in August 2011 just five months after they started dating.
And so, hearts everywhere are saying congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Mumford! May you have a long and happy life together! And Marcus, I will look forward to when you come to Nashville again and play music in Mike Harris’s basement. Bring Carey and let’s all sing Amazing Grace.
Note: Next, Carey will be seen as Daisy Buchanan in the remake of The Great Gatsby along with Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby. The film is being released on Christmas Day, 2012. And Mumford and Sons have announced that they will be performing a series of "Gentlemen of the Road Stopover" shows beginning in June. This tour is based loosely upon their favorite festivals like Colorado's Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Scotland's Loopallu Festival.
