Marco Antonio Barrera supportive of Antonio Margarito

Former three division champion Marco Antonio Barrera knows what it is like to get inside of a boxing ring and feel the rage of current pound for pound best Manny Pacquiao.

Barrera, who has lost two fights against Pacquiao, chimed in on Friday on the Filipino’s November 13 encounter with enigmatic figure Antonio Margarito.

Before being licensed by Texas to fight Pacquiao this week, Margarito was denied a license by California - which had suspended him in January, 2009, for trying to bring plaster-laced hand wraps into a contest with Shane Mosley.

Barrera clearly feels the Lone Star State made the right decision.

“This type of news makes us all happy,” said Barrera during his weekly appearance on ESPN’s Golpe a Golpe. “On my part, I find it very unjust that they [the California State Athletic Commission] would not give him a licence.”

“Good for Tony [Margarito], he hit the lottery to fight against Manny Pacquiao. They did not deny Margarito his license for being sick, or having something wrong in his brain, or having detected something, simply for using a bad hand wrap.”

It has long been acknowledged by students of boxing that Texas is quite liberal in the regulation of boxing.

Barrera has his own theory for Texas loose attitude in the granting of boxing licences.

“Texas is a much more flexible commission. they have always been that way. Maybe because there are more Hispanic people in that region, they support the Hispanic fighter more.”

One can add Barrera into a group of pundits who believe Texan Jerry Jones - owner of Cowboys Stadium, which will host the fight - threw around his weight to deliver Margarito his license.

“Of course he had influence, because he knows the majority of people who go to the Stadium are Hispanic. It is a fight many people wanted to see, here in Mexico, and in the United States.”

When it comes to the fight itself, Barrera fells Margarito could win.

“Antonio has a peculiar style which will enable him to put on a great show. If he can catch Pacquiao with one or two shots, it will be a different story, but it will be difficult for him to catch Pacquiao.”

Barrera’s lukewarm support of a Margarito victory is the most balanced and realistic analysis he provided on Friday night.

Im a big fan of pacman, but you style of sizing marco antonio barrera, you make your self look idiot and no brain.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

I think there's no jealousy in there. Marco just said it right that's why Manny decided to fight Tony at a catch weight 151lbs instead of the exact weight limit of 154lbs. Despite all of that, you can't count Tony out in any way. He has everything to defeat the pound per pound champ by KO or UD unlike Clottey.

To barrera, Sorry mate.. you have to tight fisrt some of the welter weight before you can face again manny

  • snuff 1 year ago

That was a very realistic statement that barrera made. marco is a legend much respect to him. Pac should win this fight but it is true , that if he gets hit with a couple good shots he can go down just like any other boxer. will that happen though , it is highly unlikely that margarito will hit him clean but hes always got a punchers chance.

A lot of people are quick to condemn Margarito, unfortunately his quilt was never proven beyond any doubt. 5 prominent coaches including Master Freddie Roach acknowledge that a boxer doesn't have to know what is inside in his hand wrap. That revelation in itself is favorable to Margarito's defense on innocence. Pacman is also a victim of trial by publicity and it seems he has to prove his innocence to the accuser instead of the other way around. That's American justice.

  • jekster 1 year ago

You're wrong, Roach said that the fighter Should KNOW if theres something in the wraps.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

But remember Manny filed a defamation lawsuit against Mayweather and others for their deliberate attempt to smear his good name. If that lawsuit moves through as I imagine it will, it will be a big and deserved payday for Pacquiao in court, and a big loss for Mayweather and company.

Manny shouldn't even care to fight Mayweather anymore. Floyd doesn't deserve the payday that fighting Manny would bring, considering he and his families behavior including illegal defamation of character. Manny should just wait for his day in court. That's the appropriate thing to do.

I believe the defamation lawsuit is set to get moving soon after the beginning of the new year.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Even Shane Mosely says that he doesn't believe Margarito knew about the illegal handwraps. I'm not convinced he knew. Maybe he did and maybe he didn't. There's certainly room for reasonable doubt. If his trainer wrapped his hands illegally without Margarito's knowledge, he shouldn't be banned permanently from boxing for the corruption of his trainer. Again, there's plenty of room for doubt, and Shane Mosely doesn't believe Margarito knew either. Maybe he knew and maybe he didn't. I'm not convinced either way. I have my doubts, and that's good enough for me to believe he deserves to get a license to fight again.

I concur with Barrera's statement that Margacheato has a chance of winning against Pacquiao, only if he can land multiple power punches into Pacquiao's jaw, temple and liver area on the stomach. Margacheato is a lot taller, bigger, stronger and has high determination and motivation to defeat the only mexicutioner alive in front of thousands and thousands of live Mexican audience in Cowboys Football stadium in Dallas, Texas. I disagree with Barrera that Margacheato is well deserving to be in the ring with Pacquiao at all, I sincerely believed that Texas boxing commission should not have issued a license to Margacheato, they should have have followed Nevada and California, in fact it would be to some boxing fans satisfaction including myself that Margacheato be suspended to box anywhere indefinetly.

My goodness paclanders....if you don't understand what the article was all about, please refrain from posting stupid comments. If you want, I'll translate it in Tagalog or Bisaya, and then you can comment in Tagalog or Bisaya. Don't try to be what you are not. Wag pilitin ang d pwede.

You've got to specify and directly reply to the stupid comments you're referring to, coz there are very intelligent and well written comments on this site. Additionally, you don't have the right to call anyone stupid no matter what their comments is all about, you may disagree with their comments, but don't judge and call people that you don't really know offensive names, coz this will make you a worst person and appropriatley branded as low life. Perhaps, this will enlighten you, whomever don't have a sin may cast the first stone. May God bless us all!

  • Roger P 1 year ago

Blood test is not required by the boxing commission. Why the heck would these boxers undergo testing which is not required?

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

You've got to enlighten me where I called somebody stupid. If you took time to read my comment, I think I said stupid comments. You don't have to know somebody to discern a stupid comment from a non stupid one. And need I identify which one is the stupid one and which one is the intelligent one? You are shooting from the hip my friend, and I think you are as guilty as Honda (there, I identified the stupid comment) in terms of posting stupid comments. Please note that I did not call you stupid, but you can call me a lowlife if you want to. I am nowhere near as insecure as you. And please stop using God to finish your sentence, be cause that wasn't your intention. You're thinking that you're posting an intelligent comment, but hey, your comment(s) are only as good as the brain where they're coming from.

And, since Margacheato has not been punished enough for the dispecable attempt to cheat by using illegal wraps in his hands, hopefully Pacquiao will appropriately punish him in the ring with punishment that fit his crime and that would be making him kiss the canvass for good so that when he awakens, he'll decide to retire from boxing like Hatton.

  • Will he be Blood tested? 1 year ago

Will Pedman be Blood tested, or Cheato needs to pull something out of his sombrero. Lets not forget that a millions of dollar fights was not made coz a blood test was not agree upon.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

So you reckon getting paid megabucks that he doesn't deserve is punishment? You are as much a sucker as a lot of people. Why do you think they call it the Pacquiao lottery? He'll probably put in as much effort as Clottey did, probably worse. Manny will not punish him, he will reward him. And before you go on a rant, I am a Pacquiao fan. A huge one. But this is one fight that I strongly disagree with, and goes to show the moral scruples of our idol. Contrary to what some people have put forward, manny has a choice. He could have said no, but he chose not to.

  • Roger P, 1 year ago

If you were in Pacquiao's shoes, I know you would even ask Arum to fight the an easier opponent rather than Antonio Margarito so you can get your $ with less risk. Pacquiao should not be crucified with his decision of fighting this naturally bigger opponent. He should be commended instead for his courage to fight a guy, who most people think has a great chance of beating him. Margarito has been caught trying to cheat. Do you he'll be able to even try to cheat again now that all eyes are on him? For no other reason, this fight has a great chance of being a blockbuster again only because Pacquiao is trying to push himself to the limit!

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

You are completely missing the point. Its not about Margarito being a bigger guy. It's what he tried to do, which is tantamount to attempted murder. Hitting somebody on the head with rocks is no joke. Now if you think that he has a Chinaman's chance of beating Pacquiao, watch his last two fights. Sans the handwraps, he is worse than a Ricky Hatton. As much as I love Manny, a fight with this guy is against all that our idol stands for. If this was Mayweather fighting Margarito, I would understand it. Sorry to burst the bubble, but I think Manny was as bad as Arum in making this fight. I still love him though

  • Cloud78 1 year ago

PAC made it clear a few months back that if the NSAC demands the test, he will honor it.. blood test and everything.. does that sound like PAC is afraid to take the test??? even the NSAC acknowledged PACs statement and Roach advised Floyd that if he really wants the fight, he must do it the right way and go to the NSAC and request for the test..
all Floyd has to do is to go to the NSAC and request for the test, and then we have a fight, but he didnt even bother.. why is that??? im sure you haters didnt even bother asking yourself that....

Thanks for the article Ricardo... Barrera and David Diaz are some of the purest warriors out there... and I really respect his(Barerra's take on the this fight)...

i'm a pacfan, but i hope some pacfans should understand first what was written in a column before they write a bad comment which could give a bad image to all pacfans. in this column i think barrera just give his support to of course margarito, his "kabayan". hoping margo could catch pacquiao with one or two shots, but admits that it will be difficult for margo to catch pacquiao.

  • eddyb 1 year ago

Pacman perhaps wins this fight only if he he can take Margacheato's power punches, coz if not, it's going to be a long nite for Pacquiao. Conversely, if Margarito can not take Pacquiao's fast punches in bunches coming from all directions, it's going to be a long night for him as well. Bottom line, inorder for Margacheato to win by knockout, he must utilize his technical ability in boxing and land power punches into Pacquiao's jaw, temple and/or liver area of the stomach in successive combination, coz if not, then most likely the champ and the cogressman will take him out in the first 4 rounds with fast combinations directed to land on his face and body. Remember, Margacheato is stronger, however his punches is slower and will be delivered in projection which would allow Pacquiao to apply his defensive posture and nulify his power, at the same token Pacquiao would take advantage of Margacheato's slower motion which would make him a stationary target by Pacquiao's quicker power punches in bunches delivered with precision. Of course, Margarito has the chance of defeating the champ, but it's very unlikely to happen, therefore if I am a betting man, I would put with certainty my money to the fighting congressman. But, as what the saying goes, don't count the chicken until the eggs are hatch or the game is not over until the fat lady sings. On that note, we'll see and find out the winner in Nov.

IT'S A GOOD DAY FOR MARGA ACTUALLY, everybody needs a second chance, and indeed this will be a very exciting fight (floydie baby, where are you now my love? will you please announce your next fight when and who's the lucky gay now the PACQUIAO MARGARITO will push thru? are you still on leave? NYAHAHA), good luck, may the best fighter win...

  • cebuboy 1 year ago

they question Margarito"s license issuance just to fight PACMAN, even elaborated that they should shut the door for this fighter by not giving him the said fight. But they did not comment?question for what they call the FACE OF BOXING not fighting PACMAN. Is this what they call justice. The boxing fans deserve more not PR. So be it............

  • Jaks 1 year ago

So far Pacman during his fight there is no major major I mean hard fight on his life to beat the opponents. Let us see what will happen on Nov. 13 since Marga is stronger , bigger ,taller than pacman. Possibel this is the end of your pacman.

  • eddyb 1 year ago

I agree with you that there's a good possibility that Pacman could suffer a defeat from the Tijuana Tornado, but it depends how bad he gets defeated before he calls it quit in boxing. If the defeat is by a close decision, he could always go back to welterweight and still try to fight Mayweather or any top contenders in that division, but if he gets knockout badly in the first few rounds then his career is over. He might as well work primarily as congressman of Sarangani. But, in my final analysis, this fight is for Pacquiao to win for these reasons: his speed, elusiveness, and power punches in bunches coming from all directions delivered with precision. But, we'll see, you could be right, we'll never know.
