Marcia Gay Harden says she is having a great time with her character on ABC’s new comedy “Trophy Wife” which follows a reformed party girl’s new life (Malin Akerman) when she marries an older man (Bradley Whitford) and finds herself with a family that includes stepchildren and two ex-wives. Harden plays Diane, ex-wife number one and a tough and overachieving Olympic athlete who is also the mother of twin teenagers. I caught up with the Oscar-winning actress at the Paley Center for Media’s Fall ABC Paleyfest event where she told me what she’s most enjoying about being the traditional parent on “Trophy Wife”, how she relates to her as a real-life mom, and the fun moments we can except on the series this season!
What do you most enjoy about your role of Diane?
Marcia- I enjoy that she is completely accomplished. That she is tough; she says what she means. She can do anything and do it well, and is also really vulnerable and has her flaws which are very apparent to everybody else.
Marcia- No I don't think so. I think we're finding that territory. The writers are finding it. It's important for me to show it. I like playing people who have their flaws come up and who grow. Even though maybe they are a certain way, they can still grow and through all of this be a good parent to the kids and can be tolerant. I don't think she's necessarily so tolerant.
Diane seems to be a parent and a woman who is very set in her ways. Are we going to see her let loose at all this season?
Marcia- Yes. She is set in her ways. She has old world values. And I'll defend those as good values because she's a proponent of education; she's not a proponent of the hook-up culture. She wants the best for kids. And she's willing to fight for it.
What most appealed to you about “Trophy Wife”?
Marcia- I love physical comedy. I adore comedy of any kind. I just feel this is the right time for me to do this.
What was one of your favorite moment’s from this season that really stood out to you?
Marcia- I enjoyed bringing my 15-year-old daughter to see one of the episodes when Diane betrays the parent-teenager trust and she was perfectly fine doing it and my daughter literally said, “Mom, that is you! That is you mom.” I was like, ‘Well, whatever!’ (Laughs) I think that the Halloween episode is very funny. They're all great. In every case, I learned a little something more about her, her manipulation and all loving.
Do you find you are bringing some of your own parenting stories and experiences to the show?
Marcia- They have enough of their own stories, but eventually! We're in the honeymoon right now but eventually we'll be throwing them at them.
"Trophy Wife" airs Tuesday's at 9:30 pm on ABC.
