Marchesa, the Black Rose joins Selvala, Explorer Returned as another Conspiracy spoiler card which will be featured in Wizards of the Coast's upcoming Magic: The Gathering Online expansion set Vintage Masters.

Marchesa, the Black Rose - 1UBR
Legendary Creature - Human Wizard (Mythic Rare)
Dethrone (Whenever this creature attacks the player with the most life or tied for the most life, put a +1/+1 counter on it.)
Other creatures you control have dethrone.
Whenever a creature you control with a +1/+1 counter on it dies, return that card to the battlefield at the beginning of the next end step.

Marchesa, the Black Rose has a lot going on with it. Let's first take a look at the new keyword ability it introduces to the game, Dethrone. Marchesa, the Black Rose rewards you for attacking the player with the most life, during each combat step. In multiplayer games like commander, attacking the player with the most life is the "humane" thing to do oftentimes. The best part about Marchesa, the Black Rose? Even if the rival you attack has a superior board position which would result in your creatures dying you'll get them all back thanks to it's second ability.

There's a couple disadvantages to Marchesa, the Black Rose though. Because you won't get your creature back until the beginning of the next end step if you're attacking into another player with great defenses and then they use spot removal on your Marchesa, the Black Rose you'll end up wiping our your own side of the battlefield. Additionally, sometimes the player with the most life may be you. One way to mitigate these circumstances is to run cards which make you lose life, such as Underworld Connections.

Marchesa, the Black Rose is much more interesting than Mikaeus, the Unhallowed. Hypothetically you'll be able to make your creatures grow each turn with Marchesa, the Black Rose. One thing to note is Marchesa, the Black Rose's interaction with creatures that have undying. That Geralf's Messenger, will keep coming back over and over again to your opponent's horror like a terrifying recurring nightmare.

Marchesa, the Black Rose looks like a fun new Grixis commander, and we can't wait to get our hands on her.

How will you use Marchesa, the Black Rose?
