Beer, wings, and fries may be many guys' idea of the perfect dinner, especially when it can be consumed in the presence of numerous big screen TVs featuring the seasons' biggest games. It may be these menu items that attracts fans to Arooga's, but their menu has much more to offer than trans fatty foods and typical "game food".
If you are into the "junk foods", you can at least take comfort in the fact that all of their sandwedge and sub rolls are baked fresh daily, all of their sauces, dressings, soups, and salsas are homemade, their burgers are always fresh, never frozen, they fresh cut their own fries and potato chips, each pizza, stromboli, and pretzel dough is made from scratch, and each breaded, fried item is created by hand. Nutritionally, it doesn't make these foods any more acceptable to our diets, however it is nice to know that such care and preparation is put into Arooga's menu.
There are also health savvy menu items at this popular sports bar, too! At places like this, I like to pick and choose small plates to combine for an entire meal as opposed to ordering an entrée from the menu. My choices consisted of the Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail (8 jumbo shrimp chilled and served in a martini glass with cocktail sauce), the Veggie Platter (raw cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, & carrot sticks served with ranch dressing but I got mine with salsa instead), and the Salad Caprese (vine ripened tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and basil top chopped romaine and their homemade balsamic vinaigrette). A meal containing those items makes for a great balance. You've got protein, veggies, and dairy. The serving of veggies on the veggie platter was excellent too! It was practically overflowing.
Another terrific option is the Chicken & Shrimp Rice Bowl, comprised of brown rice, steamed broccoli, carrots, grilled chicken, and shrimp tossed in a dressing of your choice. Skip the dressing! This dish is completely flavorful and tasty all on its own! If you absolutely need something to spice it up, try a splash of soy sauce instead of the Asian Sesame, Teriyaki, Red Thai, or General Tso wing sauces.
Want something a little saucier? Try the fajitas! Grilled Chicken or shrimp, would be my suggestions accompanied by lettuce, diced tomato, grilled peppers, cilantro, onion, homemade salsa, guacamole, and warm tortillas. It also comes with cheese and sour cream, but you can save yourself some extra calories by going without! Who needs them with all the flavorful veggies?! Also, stick to one tortilla with all the fixings, and then make yourself a salad with the rest of the veggies. You can always take home the extras! Oh, and go light on the guacamole. It does contain many healthy fats, but you can easily overdo it.
