Tim Vogle's 24th Southeast Exotic Bird Fair http://www. exoticbirdfair.com runs Saturday, March 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the State Farmer's Market in Forest Park, Ga.
Beginners and experts alike can find rare exotic birds, breeders and babies. Admission is free. Show operator Delorce Bennett makes a point of putting education first. She believes in what she calls "the department store model" of expositions, which allows people to come whether they buy anything or not.
“There are a lot of people who don’t know anything about birds; they’re afraid of them,” Bennett says. The bird fair is an opportunity for them to talk to breeders and others who are knowledgeable about birds.
Thirty-eight vendors from across the Southeast will also have cages, breeder boxes, feed and supplements, toys, plants and other bird supplies at wholesale prices. New vendors include R&R Cages, Kissimmee Toys and Special Feathers, a breeder of Gouldian finches.
On Saturday morning, a veterinarian will inspect birds for sale to ensure that they are healthy. Nail and wing clipping are also available by appointment; call 843 216 1553.
The State Farmers Market http://birdfair.delorcesbirdbarn.com/directions/map/ is located at 16 Forest Parkway in Forest Park. Take exit 237 (Forest Park/Fort Gilliam), which is the second exit south of I-285 on the south side.
Tim Vogle's Southeast Exotic Bird Fair has two additional shows scheduled this year: June 8 and 9 and Sept. 7 and 8.
