For those of you who have no health care and have not signed-up, or looking to increase your health insurance benefits through the Affordable Care Act (ACA); this is the last call for 2014!
There are two easy options for signing-up:
- Go online to www.healthcare.gov
- Call (800) 318-2596
What you will need to sign-up:
- Your social security number
- A copy of your last tax return
If you choose to call, be prepared for a very extensive wait. While waiting, a recorded message will advise you to ensure that you have a fully charged battery, if using a cellular or cordless phone.
There may be penalties for those who are not covered and can afford healthcare insurance.
If your annual income falls at or below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), which is $15,282 for an individual or $31,322 for a family of four; you will probably be directed to apply for Medicaid Expansion. I was informed by one person who called for assistance in signing-up that because she was below the FPL, a denial email would be sent to her so that she could contact the State of Michigan for the Medicaid Expansion program. Medicaid Expansion means that there would be no out-of-pocket costs for her to receive medical services from a health care clinic. APRIL 1st is the date to begin application for Medicaid Expansion in Michigan.
I had the privilege of speaking with Jacquetta Hinton, MS; a Program Consultant for the Michigan Department of Community Health. Jacquetta disseminates information and clarification regarding the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Ms. Hinton was kind enough to share some informative slides regarding the ACA, which are available for viewing in this article.
The slides provided by Jacquetta Hinton detail the reasons for the Affordable Care Act, medical benefits, a chart of Federal Poverty Level incomes, health care providers and her contact information.
