March 30, 2010 DVD & Blu-ray: Sherlock Holmes, Alvin and the Chipmunks 2, An Education and more

This week we are off to uncover mysteries and save England with Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law in Sherlock Holmes. When done solving crimes, we can sing along with Alvin, Simon and Theodore as they battle it out with Brittany, Jeanette and Eleanor in Alvin and the Chipmunks - The Squeakquel. Tumbling down the rabbit hole yet again in a whole new light, Disney re-releases Alice in Wonderland fully remastered and restored with an all new transfer. Back from Wonderland, we head off to seek An Education like never before when a young British girl is seduced by an older gentleman. From Britain we cross continents to gangster-filled Hong Kong where Chow Yun-Fat, an assassin, cannot leave the life without complications in The Killer. Back to Los Angeles, we get to see another contract killer, Tom Cruise, in Collateral come to Blu-ray.

In Sherlock Holmes, directed by Guy Ritchie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey, Jr.) and devoted sidekick Dr. John Watson (Jude Law) have just caught a serial killer named Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong) in 1891 London. After he is hanged for his crimes, Holmes receives a surprise visit from a professional thief and former lover Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams) who asks for his help to find a man named Reordan. Things get heated when Reordan is found dead inside Lord Blackwood's tomb with no signs of Blackwood's supposedly dead body. On a quest to solve the mystery, Holmes and Dr. Watson are led to the Temple of the Four Orders, an occult secret society. They learn that black magician Lord Blackwood is still alive and has bigger plans than serial killing that will threaten to destroy England. Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson and Irene Adler must team together to figure out this mystery before it is too late.

Who will get schooled in the battle of The Chipmunks
vs. The Chipettes?

Want a break from American Idol? Pop in Alvin and the Chipmunks - The Squealquel and sing along with Alvin (Justin Long), Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler) and Theodore (Jesse McCartney) on their latest adventure. At a charity concert, Alvin's antics send Dave (Jason Lee) to the hospital. Aunt "Popcorn" Jackie (Kathryn Joosten) and their videogame-playing cousin Toby (Zachary Levi) come to watch over them, but Aunt Jackie gets sent to the hospital too when Toby forgets to set the wheelchair brakes. While Dave is in the hospital, Alvin and the Chipmunks are off to school where their celebrity status wins them adoration by the girls and hatred by the boys.

Meanwhile, ex-manager Ian (David Cross) is broke and homeless, blaming Alvin and the Chipmunks for his demise. He happens upon 3 female chipmunks, Brittany (Christina Applegate), Jeanette (Anna Faris) and Eleanor (Amy Poehler), who sent themselves via FedEx in hopes of meeting and singing with Alvin and the Chipmunks. Upon hearing them sing, Ian sees a new opportunity to redeem himself and take revenge against Alvin and the Chipmunks. When there is a Sing-Off competition, Ian enrolls the girls, "The Chipettes," into the same school as Alvin and the Chipmunks. Challenging Pricipal Rubin's (Wendie Malick) decision to have The Chipmunks represent the school in the sing-off, Alvin and the Chipmunks must now compete against The Chipettes to see who gets to go and save the school's music program with the winning $25,000. It gets even messier when things at home and school do not go very well for the brothers and The Chipettes find out Ian's intentions are not honorable. Will Alvin and the Chipmunks work out their differences, save The Chipettes and win their hearts and get the $25,000 to save the school's music program in time?
