Nominated for one Oscar and two Golden Globes, Disney’s Tangled is 50th animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. Loosely based on the Brothers Grimm’s fairytale Rapunzel, American singing sensation Mandy Moore is the voice of the spirited teen Rapunzel whose 70 feet of golden hair has magical healing powers. NBC's favorite geeky spy from the popular TV series Chuck, Zachary Levi, is the voice of the handsome bandit Flynn Rider who steals her heart.
Once upon a time in a kingdom far, far away, a queen was pregnant with child. It was not a happy affair as the queen was very sick. The guards were tasked to find a magical flower with healing powers to save the dying queen. They searched far and wide and discovered the flower that the vain old woman Mother Gothel had used for centuries to stay young. The guards took the flower and the queen was healed, giving birth to a beautiful baby girl, Rapunzel.
Desperate to save herself from growing old, Mother Gothel found that Rapunzel’s hair retained the flower’s healing abilities as long as it was not cut. She kidnapped baby Rapunzel and kept her in a tower, raising her as her own daughter. Using Rapunzel’s long hair, Mother Gothel was able to make herself young again and again over the years.
The kingdom was very sad that their princess was gone. Each year on Rapunzel’s birthday, the king and queen and the rest of the kingdom would have a Festival of Lights and send out thousands of lanterns into the sky. They prayed that their long lost princess would return someday. Every year, Rapunzel saw the Festival of Lights from her tower and longed to join the festivities, not realizing the lights were for her.
On Rapunzel’s eighteenth birthday, she asks Mother Gothel if she can go out to watch the floating lanterns. Afraid of losing Rapunzel and her healing abilities, Mother Gothel denies her birthday request. Mother Gothel warns Rapunzel that the world is full of danger and the tower will protect evil people from hurting Rapunzel as long as she stays inside.
Meanwhile at the castle, thieves have just stolen the missing princess’ tiara. Chased by the guards, the kingdom’s most wanted and charming bandit Flynn Rider and his accomplices run off. Flynn separates from them and stumbles upon the tower. The lead guard’s horse Maximus is in hot pursuit and Flynn decides to hide inside the tower. There he meets Rapunzel, who has never laid eyes on another human aside from Mother Gothel, much less a man.
Rapunzel knocks Flynn unconscious with a frying pan, steals his satchel containing the stolen tiara and hides him in the closet. She then convinces Mother Gothel to go on a 3-day journey to retrieve the ingredients for a special paint she wants for her birthday present. When Flynn wakes up, she makes a deal with him. If he takes her to see the Festival of Lights, she will return his precious satchel back to him.
Together as an unlikely pair, Rapunzel and Flynn embark on a fantastic journey as she leaves her tower for the very first time. Along the way Rapunzel learns that although the world may be dangerous, there are friends who come in all forms that make it safe, exciting and full of fairy tale surprises.
After the 1937 debut of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and a long list of highly acclaimed musical fairy tales created by Disney’s animation group, Tangled is the very last “happily ever after” fairy tale in the foreseeable future. As the fairy tale storybook ends and Disney closes the doors to developing fairy tale projects such as The Snow Queen and Jack and the Beanstalk, the studio will seek a wider audience appeal and focus on new heroes such as Jack Sparrow in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, in theaters on May 20, 2011.
