March 2014 Events at Family Shelter Service

When one stops to consider that domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 and 44 in the United States, one has to commend organizations like Family Shelter Service (FSS) for their dedication and support. They are but one of 1,500 shelters for battered women in the United States, and they stand loud and proud for the work that they accomplish each and every day.

Annually, FSS serves about 2,000 clients in various ways (see http://www.familyshelterservice.org/cms/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Press-Kit-7-12-all-pages.pdf) since they were founded in 1976 (38 years ago!). To date, they have one emergency shelter, two intermediate shelters, a 24-hours crisis hotline, community advocacy programs, court and victim advocacy as well as Order of Protection assistance, employment assistance and financial literacy, in addition to individual and group counseling for adults and children.

FSS funds their endeavors through the generous support of the community through individual donors, foundations, community businesses, churches and organizations, government grants, the revenue from their two resale shops (Second Chance Resale) and from the United Way. They attempt to get the community involved through various functions that they put on that draw some positive attention.

This month the functions include the following:

1. On Saturday, March 22nd from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m., Family Shelter Service invites you to come out to the Caribou Coffee located at 5100 Main Street in Downers Grove to listen to some local folk musicians perform. The performance is in celebration of Women’s History Month which is denoted in the month of March. All proceeds from this event will help to further the mission of FSS. Songs will be performed by the following artists: Vicki and Rich Ingle of Comfort Food, Robinlee Garber and Amy Dixon-Kolar. There will not be a cover charge for this event, but donations will be graciously accepted during the entire performance which will in turn be given to FSS to distribute as they see fit amongst their various service methods.

2. The second big event you will want to pay attention to will take place on Saturday, March 29th from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. It is the Wheaton Wedding Walk which is scheduled to take place in Downtown Wheaton, Illinois. Brides to be and their family and friends are encouraged to attend. There will be many boutiques, shops and restaurants offering various bridal services, wedding and reception space that they can view on this extraordinary occasion. There is an entry fee for this event in which a portion of it will go to benefit those served at Family Shelter Service. What a great day to plan and to help those in desperate need all at the same time!

So, mark your calendar if you are able to attend. Not only will you be helping yourself while having a great day, you will help FSS help people in remarkable ways that they could not do without you being there!
