Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom chronicles the life of anti-apartheid revolutionary and former South African President Nelson Mandela. It delves into his early life with humble beginnings as a herd boy in a rural village, his education and marriage to Winnie Mandela. His involvement in the anti-apartheid movement -- co-founding the African National Congress Youth League -- eventually leads to his imprisonment for 27 years on Robben Island before becoming South Africa’s first democratically elected president. He then dedicates the remainder of his life to rebuilding the country’s once segregated society. In his words: “Today we are a nation at peace with itself, united in our diversity, not only proclaiming but living out the contention that South Africa belongs to all who live in it. We take our place amongst the nations of the world, confident and proud in being an African country.”
