Ice King created some pretty good fan-fiction of the adventures of Fionna and Cake, the gender-swapped versions of protagonists Finn and Jake from the hit animated series "Adventure Time" airing on Cartoon Network. With her cat Cake, Fionna showed herself as an action girl who faced both villains and awkward feelings toward her guy friends like Prince Gumball (voiced by Neil Patrick Harris). Fans of the series loved the new interpretation and clamored for more Fionna and Cake.
Now come February 18 at 7:30pm ET and PT on Cartoon Network, "Adventure Time" airs the second special Fionna and Cake episode titled "Bad Little Boy." Lots of time has passed since the first Fionna and Cake episode and Ice King's writing quality has deteriorated,--as his captive audience of princesses are quick to point out.. Luckily, Marceline the Vampire Queen comes in to offer her own take on the fan-fiction.
Without revealing too much, Marceline proves to be a better storyteller as she regales the audience with her author-inserted gender-swapped character Marshall Lee the Vampire King's (voiced by Donald Glover) combative and occasionally flirtatious friendship and potential relationship with Fionna. Marshall Lee certainly lives up to being the titular bad little boy as he toys with Fionna's heart and head through teasing, kidnapping, and even singing. Marshall Lee is very effective as his antics do hit Fionna emotionally. It's the typical good girl is conflicted with the bad little boy who she may have feelings for story, but Fionna's resolve prevents the episode from feeling too cliché. It's another great interpretation of the gender-swapped characters of “Adventure Time,” though Ice King may be a little TOO absorbed with his fan-fiction. Or maybe he's hinting at something. Further episodes on Cartoon Network should shed some light.
This second installment of Fionna and Cake on February 18 coincides with the February 19 release of the next "Adventure Time" compilation DVD conveniently titled "Fionna and Cake."
