The Massachusetts metal band, Hellspeak, which includes members of Machines of Grace and Shadows Fall released their debut EP, " The Slaughter Rule of Agony" on Oct 31, 2013. The music was written and arranged by lead vocalist Marc Lopes and guitarist, Matt Leff.
The band features drummer Jason Bittner (Shadows Fall, TOXIK), vocalist Marc Lopes (Meliah Rage, Dark Day Sunday), bassist Chris Rapoza (Machines of Grace) and guitarist Matt Leff (Machines of Grace). The CD was mixed and produced by Paul David Hager (Van Halen, GOO GOO DOLLS, PINK) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Slayer, RUSH, Pantera).
If you can't play this CD full volume, then don't bother.
Examiner spoke with Lopes, vocalist for Hellspeak to find out more about this band.
Examiner: Tell me about Hellspeak and your new release?
Lopes: "Hellspeak's pulls from all across the metal spectrum. We wear one label and that's metal. Our sound brings together elements of modern and classic metal to thrash and prog seamlessly brought together. I have a wide range when it comes to vocals. I do the vicious screams to falsetto howls to soaring choruses. My guitarist Matt Leff crushes his guitar with memorable riffs and Chris Rapoza and Jason Bittner nail it all together with surgical precision.
It's not easy in this day to create a record that is undeniably metal without sounding rehashed and derivative and that's exactly what Hellspeak has done."
Examiner: Over the years you've performed with some of your band mates in other bands?
Lopes: "Yes, Rapoza, Leff and I do have a history spanning back to our days in Trigger Effect, a Boston based band who had success opening for Iron Maiden and Queensryche. Bittner joined us after he and I worked together in the band, Dark Day Sunday which opened for Dream Theater on several dates."
Examiner: You also sing in a few local tribute bands?
Lopes: "I do. I play in an 80’s Metal Tribute band called "METAL:101" in the New England area for the last four years. We cover everything from Dream Theater to Slayer and other obscure bands like Helloween, Lizzy Borden and Testament which is not common ground in the cover/tribute band scene.
I also sing for the legendary Metal band "Meliah Rage" who was really successful in the late 1980’s. They asked me to join back in March 2013. We recorded a Euro only single which will be released worldwide sometime in early 2014 before our new CD entitled "WARRIOR" is released in Spring 2014. There will be a tour in late spring/summer 2014."
Examiner: Who is your favorite artist and inspiration to do what you do? And who are some of the artists that you have worked with over the years?
Lopes: "Iron Maiden is my all time favorite band.
Ive worked with metal artists George Lynch from Dokken, Vicious Rumors, members of Shadows Fall, Members of Fates Warning. And as I mentioned earlier, when I was with Trigger Effect we opened up Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Halford, Dream Theater to name a few."
Examiner: What are some of your upcoming shows in December?
Lopes: "We have two Rhode Island shows in December.
December 20,2013 - Club Fete in Providence, Rhode Island
December 31, 2013 - Mardi Gras in Cranston, Rhode Island.
Boston dates coming up after the first.
